latvia - Latvian government issues guidelines to help citizens identify Russian spies, highlighting signs like unkempt appearance and suspicious behavior.

Latvia's Efforts to Identify Russian Spies

The Latvian government is assisting its citizens in recognizing potential Russian spies by providing tips on spotting them based on their appearance and behavior. The Military Intelligence and Security Service of Latvia (MIDD) emphasized that Russian intelligence poses a significant threat to national security.

Recognizing Suspect Behavior

The MIDD report suggests that Russian agents may disguise themselves as humanitarian workers, loiter around sensitive areas such as military bases, or exhibit suspicious behavior in remote natural locations. Latvians are advised to be vigilant of individuals with unkempt appearances, mismatched clothing, and those displaying excessive curiosity.

Furthermore, individuals who appear to be lost tourists could potentially be Russian saboteurs or spies, according to the MIDD. The agency also highlights that suspected Russian agents might carry items like first aid kits, maps, or radios.

Response Protocol

If someone suspects encountering a Russian spy, the MIDD advises against confronting them and recommends reporting the incident to the police, special services, or the nearest military unit. Recent arrests of pro-Russian individuals in Germany and Switzerland for allegedly planning attacks serve as a reminder of the ongoing tensions between Russia and Europe.

Given the heightened tensions since the conflict in Ukraine, EU and NATO member states remain vigilant against Russian sabotage and hybrid warfare tactics. Instances of cyberattacks, arson, and damage to undersea cables have been attributed to Moscow, despite Kremlin's denial of such allegations.
