bolzano - More than five thousand years after his death, it became clear what was the last meal of Ötzi the IJsman, the famous frozen mummy found in the Alps. Ötzi ate fat meat, grain and fern shortly before his death.

Scientists from the Eurac laboratory in Bolzano, Italy, have researched the stomach contents of Ötzi. They found fresh or dried meat of Alpine ibex and red deer, as well as some unmilled echinow wheat. That is a forerunner of modern wheat. There were also traces of bracken. He may have used it as a remedy against parasites in his intestines.

His stomach was full when he died. About half was animal fat. This is necessary for heavy efforts in extreme conditions. Ötzi must have used up a lot of energy in the Alps. His body was found at 3,210 meters above sea level.
