- Archaeologists have saved themselves years of fieldwork with a new laser technique, with which tens of thousands of hidden Mayan ruins have been discovered in the tropical rainforest of Guatemala.

The scientists jump into the air after the important discovery, which was done with the aid of the Lidar laser.

That technique is similar to the sonar of a bat. Approximately 2. 100 square kilometers of vegetated area was scanned with the laser. It turned out that there was a pyramid under some 'mountains'. Over the years, the ruins have been covered by vegetation and soil.

Archaeologists are learning more and more about the culture of the ancient Maya. Many buildings and roads appear to be more sophisticated than previously thought. The city 'Tika' appears to be a lot bigger than it was known.
