orsières/fun bath - Nearly 90 people have been evacuated from the Swiss holiday resort of La Fouly for fear of avalanches. The people in the town, in the mountains about 65 kilometers southeast of Lausanne, had to leave their chalets on Thursday.
That happened Wednesday already several dozens of residents and holidaymakers in Conthey in the same canton Valais.
At least they can leave. Many people in the Swiss mountains no longer. Avalanches and landslides caused by the recent violent storm have blocked roads to places in southwestern Switzerland.
For example, the valleys that are popular with skiers such as Saas, the Lötschental and the Gommertal are closed off for a part of the outside world. Ski resort Leukerbad is no longer accessible due to avalanches. According to local media, there are an estimated 10,000 people there.
