reykjavik - Kristrún Frostadóttir, the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance, has been appointed as the new prime minister of Iceland at the age of 36, making her the youngest prime minister in the country's history.

Kristrún Frostadóttir, the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance, has been appointed as the new prime minister of Iceland. With 36 years, Frostadóttir becomes the youngest prime minister in the country's history.

The Social Democratic Alliance forms a coalition with the People's Party and the Reform Party. The leaders of these three parties are women. It is also the first time that both the Icelandic prime minister and president are women simultaneously.

The new government is formed following early elections on November 30 in the country, after the collapse of the cabinet of Bjarni Benediktsson.

The previous cabinet consisted of Benediktsson's conservative Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement, and the Progressive Party. The Independence Party had its worst election result ever in the November elections.
