Knowing that someone finds you attractive makes them more attractive

- If you do not know that someone is interested in you or not, you will find that person less sexually attractive. British researchers have discovered this on the basis of new studies. People feel more sexual desire when they are sure that the other party is interested.

Research from the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya at the University of Rochester shows that uncertainty about the interest of a potential partner may possibly lead to him or her finding less attractive. For although some scientists claim that uncertainty just contributes to sexual attraction, six related studies now show the opposite.

51 women and 50 men took part in one of the studies. The researchers had each participant participate in a chat conversation with another participant, of the opposite sex, who was in a different room. Then they took a picture of the participant and told him or her that the other person would see the picture. The participant also got a picture of the so-called chat partner.

At the end of the chat session, the participant was allowed to leave one message for the chat partner. Some participants were told that their chat partner had left a message, to others that nothing was waiting for it- certainty or uncertainty, in other words. Then participants had to describe their sexual desire to the partner on a scale of 1 to 5.

The results revealed that participants were more attracted to their chat partner in the certain situation than in the uncertain.

'People can protect themselves against a potentially painful rejection by distancing themselves from possible rejecting partners,' says co-author Harry Reis, psychology professor at the University of Rochester. 'When people are certain of the interest of a partner, their sexual desires are higher. '

According to lead author Gurit Birnham, social psychologist and psychology professor at IDC Herzliya, the research shows that sexual attraction 'serves as a kind of indicator, on gut feeling, for the degree of fitness that encourages people to have a romantic relationship with a reliable and valuable partner. 'On the other hand,' the slowing of desires can serve as a protective mechanism against investing in a relationship whose future is uncertain. '
