Kill in fuel riots Haiti
port-au-prince - In violent protests against the planned rise in fuel prices, according to local media, at least seven people were killed in Haiti. They were killed during looting in and around the capital Port-au-Prince. The police also spoke of killing, but did not give an exact number.
Demonstrators set fire to roadblocks in the capital Port-au-Prince, plundered stores, attacked hotels and set fire to cars, radio station Metropole reported. Shots were also released. Also in other cities, such as Cayes, Jérémie, Cap-Haitien and Jacmel, there was strong protests. The airports of the country are closed.
The government has decided to temporarily suspend the price increase of up to 50 per cent for the time being. 'We condemn the violence and vandalism,' wrote Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant on Twitter.
Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The Caribbean state depends to a large extent on foreign support. Corruption and violence are widespread.
