Judge wants to release ex-president Brazil

brasilia - A Brazilian federal judge, Rogério Favreto, has ordered that the former Brazilian president Luíz Inacio Lula da Silva be released. The leftist politician Lula da Silva has been detained in the city of Curituba since April, because he has been convicted for twelve years because of a corruption case called the triplex case. Lula accepted an apartment on the coast of the state of São Paulo as a gift from a construction company. The expensive apartment was actually a bribe from the company that wanted government assignments.

Lula served as president from 2003 to 2010. During those years he conducted a costly and socially responsible policy that drew many Brazilians out of poverty. He is therefore still popular while the country suffers for years under an economic crisis. Lula wants to participate again in the presidential elections that are in October.

It is unclear whether Lula is actually released. The Public Prosecutor and the special anti-corruption judge Sérgio Moro oppose this.
