Judge deprives Lula from his passport

World January 26, 2018 07:15

brasilia - A court in Brazil has approved the seizure of the passport of the convicted Brazilian former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The former president and current candidate of the Labor Party in the upcoming elections was about to leave for Africa.

Lula was convicted of corruption and money laundering a day earlier and was sentenced to 12 years and one month in prison. Because the court was unanimous in the verdict, Lula will probably be declared ineligible. The former president has not yet been arrested because he can appeal against the verdict.

A spokesperson for Lula, who was president from early 2003 to 2011, said he will not travel to Africa now. He wanted to attend a conference in Ethiopia.
