washington/london - American Vice President JD Vance faces backlash from British officials and military personnel over comments on war involvement.

JD Vance's Controversial Statement

American Vice President JD Vance stirred up controversy with his remarks on war participation, particularly regarding troops from countries that have not been involved in wars for decades.

Vance criticized the idea of sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, proposed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, stating that providing economic benefits to the United States would be a better security guarantee. This comment was in response to a resource deal between the US and Kiev. He did not specifically mention Great Britain, but the direct response to a British proposal caused dismay in Downing Street.

British Prime Minister Starmer's spokesperson expressed admiration for the British troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, highlighting the sacrifices made by many soldiers, including those from the US. Criticism of Vance's statement also emerged from military circles, with former Veterans Affairs Minister Johnny Mercer and Shadow Defense Minister James Cartlidge condemning his remarks as disrespectful and ignoring the services and sacrifices of British troops.

Former British military personnel, including Mike Martin and Helen Maguire, found Vance's comments highly offensive, emphasizing the joint efforts of British and American soldiers in conflicts like Afghanistan. Marine veteran Ben McBean, who lost a limb in Afghanistan, sharply criticized Vance, stating that he should refrain from commenting on matters he has not experienced firsthand.
