japan - Japanese toilets, equipped with various high-tech features, are unable to be cleaned with toilet paper according to manufacturer Toto's instructions.

Japanese toilets, equipped with music players, automatic flushes, air dryers, and heated seats, are not to be cleaned with toilet paper according to a recent instruction from manufacturer Toto. Specifically, the seat should not be cleaned with ordinary toilet paper as it can cause microscopic scratches.

The company's decision comes in response to numerous customer complaints about discolored and scratched seats.

Toto explained to the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun that their bidet toilet seats are made of a sensitive plastic resin which can be scratched by toilet paper or dry cloths.

Various lifestyle websites have investigated this 'issue,' suggesting that a soft cloth with water or dish soap can be a residue-free alternative.

The Toto Washlets in question, referred to as 'shower toilets' in some countries, are available for prices ranging from 2800 to as high as 9000 euros. The manufacturer guarantees '101% hygiene' for that price point, with each user being able to customize their own settings.
