Italy wants the Netherlands to bring back ships

World June 16, 2018 17:54

rome - Italy has asked The Hague to recall ships that pick up migrants under the Dutch flag in the Mediterranean. This happened after one of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that coordinate and finance the rescue operations the Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini called a fascist.

This comment was made in the booming discussion that arose after Salvini had said that it would no longer allow boats of foreign NGOs in Italian ports. The leader of the right-wing populist government party Lega focused his arrows via Facebook and Twitter on the Aquarius, which is on its way to Spain with hundreds of refugees on board.

With his measure, Salvini also refers to the Lifeline and Seefuchs, which try to prevent migrants from drowning off the Libyan coast. Smugglers often send them out into the sea under appalling conditions. The rescue vessels are registered in the Netherlands, as is the Sea-Watch 3, which also patrols the area. Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli tweeted Saturday that the Netherlands should take them home.
