IS conquers piece of East Ghouta
damascus - Extremists of Islamic State (IS) have extended their besieged stronghold in East Ghouta. With a surprise attack, they captured an area about 5 kilometers south of the center of Damascus in the night from Monday to Tuesday.
Observers from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have reported that IS has taken a piece of al-Qadam. Dozens of government soldiers have been killed and many others have been captured and allegedly executed. IS has spread images of dozens of bodies in al-Qadam.
The Syrian government troops have been besieging a number of strongholds in the East-Ghouta region for years, which are in the grip of mainly jihadists. IS has a piece of approximately 4 by 4 kilometers on the south side of Damascus.
Other jihadists control areas on the northeast edge of the city. There, according to the Syrian authorities, they have fired missiles on a market in Damascus on Tuesday. As a result, around 35 civilians were killed and dozens were injured.
