iran - Iran's pursuit of a nuclear bomb with apocalyptic motivations sparks worry among experts and intelligence agencies.

Iran's Rush for Nuclear Weapons

Iran's accelerated efforts to build a nuclear bomb have raised concerns among experts and intelligence agencies. The Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) plays a crucial role in this pursuit, driven by a belief in accelerating the return of the Mahdi, a messianic figure whose appearance signifies the end times.

Experts warn that Iran's possession of a nuclear weapon, especially under the IRGC's control, poses unique risks due to the group's extremist ideology and apocalyptic beliefs. The IRGC, initially established as a militia, has evolved into an ideological army with its own intelligence service, staunchly anti-American and anti-Israel.

The belief in the return of the Mahdi, a figure associated with bringing world peace after apocalyptic events, has been weaponized by some Iranian leaders to justify the pursuit of nuclear capabilities. Former President Ahmadinejad's actions, such as spending millions on a mosque believed to be the Mahdi's return site, exemplify this belief.

Iran's intentions have been met with international scrutiny and diplomatic efforts to prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, Iran's recent advancements in uranium enrichment, reaching 60% purity, indicate a shift towards nuclear armament as a strategic deterrent.

While Iran faces obstacles in achieving a fully functional nuclear bomb, experts warn that delaying or sabotaging Iran's nuclear ambitions may only offer temporary solutions. The potential consequences of a nuclear-armed Iran extend beyond regional instability, triggering a dangerous arms race in the Middle East and increasing the risk of catastrophic accidents.
