Iran: EU is trying to save nuclear agreement

World May 19, 2018 08:54

teheran - The boss of the Iranian nuclear authorities, Ali Akbar Salehi, said Saturday that the European Union is doing everything to save the nuclear agreement of the great powers with Iran. This is despite the fact that US President Donald Trump announced on 8 May that he would end the agreement and reinstate sanctions against Iran.

' We hope that their efforts will become a reality. The actions of America show that it is not a reliable country in international negotiations, 'said Salehi at a joint press conference in Tehran with the European Commissioner for Energy and Climate, Miguel Cañete, where the EU Commissioner is talking about energy cooperation in Iran.

The EU is keen to maintain the Iran deal because according to the union it provides the best guarantee for security in the region and Europe.

In the context of the agreement concluded by Iran in 2015, the country has restricted its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of most Western sanctions against Tehran.

Cañete, who arrived late Friday in Tehran for a two-day visit, wants to reassure Iran that the EU wants to keep trade open despite the US withdrawal from the pact.

'We have signaled to our Iranian friends that as long as they abide by the agreement, Europeans will keep their promise. And they said the same thing, but the other way around, 'says Cañete.' We will try to intensify our trade flows, which have been very good for the Iranian economy. '

The EU was once the largest importer of Iranian oil.
