brussels - Belgium reopens investigation into the notorious Nijvel Gang following request from victims' lawyer.

Belgium Reopens Investigation into Nijvel Gang

The investigation into the notorious Nijvel Gang is being reopened in Belgium, following a request from a lawyer representing children of one of the victims. The Belgian Public Prosecutor had officially closed the investigation last June, unable to identify the perpetrators behind the murders and robberies committed by the gang between 1982 and 1985. The Nijvel Gang primarily targeted supermarkets, resulting in 28 deaths and forty injuries during their attacks.

The Public Prosecutor is now required to conduct further investigation into a car possibly linked to one of the offenders. Two brothers claimed to have seen the car just before a robbery in Aalst in November 1985, where eight people were killed. The brothers, aged nine and seven at the time, informed their father about the suspicious car with 'unsavory characters' inside, even noting down the license plate. Despite the father alerting the police, the lawyer alleges that this lead was overlooked. 'The Dutroux case was solved with half a license plate,' the lawyer stated. 'Here we have the full plate, yet it was not even investigated?'
