sao paulo - Brazilian prosecutors are again prosecuting a prominent member of Workers' Party PT for corruption. This Fernando Haddad, the former mayor of Sao Paulo, is expected to become the presidential candidate of his party in the short term.

The PT had initially put forward the popular former president Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva to join the next election on behalf of the party. However, Lula is behind the bars because of a corruption judgment. The electoral court declared his candidacy invalid.

Haddad was the vice-presidential candidate of Lula. He will probably also act as the replacement for the detainees former president. The candidacy of Haddad is probably not at risk due to the corruption case. It is almost inconceivable that the verdict is made before the Brazilians go to the polls next month.

The corruption case is linked to payments to Haddad's campaign when he tried to become mayor of Sao Paulo in 2012. Prosecutors believe that a construction conglomerate tried to gain influence illegally. The Haddad campaign team says prosecutors rely on an incorrect statement.
