greece - Rising seismic activity in the Aegean Sea triggers alarm in Greece as thousands evacuate Santorini island amid fears of a major earthquake.

Seismic Activity in Greece

Recent seismic activity in the Aegean Sea, particularly around Santorini, has led to heightened concerns in Greece. At least 36 tremors were recorded overnight, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents and closure of schools on 13 islands. The seismic movements show no signs of slowing down, with experts warning of the potential for a major earthquake.

Precautionary Measures

Authorities have taken precautionary measures, urging citizens to avoid gathering in enclosed spaces, staying away from dilapidated buildings, and refraining from visiting beaches at risk of landslides. The evacuation of Santorini residents to safer locations is underway, with additional flights and boats arranged to transport those seeking to leave the island.

Government Response

The Greek government, under the leadership of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias, has declared a state of emergency in Santorini, Amorgos, Nisyros, and Anafi islands. School closures have been announced until Friday to ensure the safety of students and residents in the affected regions.
