Increased number of HIV infections
- The number of new HIV infections has risen for the first time in twenty years. In 2015, 2.1 million infections worldwide are detected. This growth rises to 5 percent from the year before, according to figures from the Global AIDS Update Report by UNAIDS.
The increase is in accordance with Louise van Deth, director of AIDS Fund, primarily through diagnoses in countries in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia. 'Countries that refuse to invest in prevention and care, especially for HIV-risk groups such as gay men, drug users and sex workers, create a new HIV epidemic.'
Half of the infections may be caused by drug use. Through the use of non-sterile needles there is a chance that the user is HIV. In Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia, this is the main cause of infection.
