european union - Illegal migration from Bangladesh to the European Union surges, with over 47,000 illegal border crossings in three months. Learn why thousands risk their lives for the dangerous journey.

Increase in Illegal Migration from Bangladesh to EU Raises Concerns

Despite the vast distance and multiple countries between Bangladesh and the EU, a growing number of Bangladeshis are attempting to reach Europe, with over 47,000 illegal border crossings in three months, according to Frontex.

Shift in Demographics

Previously dominated by Syrians, the illegal migration route to Europe now sees more Afghans, Malians, Eritreans, and notably, Bangladeshis. The route through North Africa to Italy has become popular, with over 2500 Bangladeshis reaching Italy in just two winter months.

The Deadly Journey

Described as a 'deadly ride,' human smugglers organize the entire journey from flights to visa applications, with costs ranging from €9,500 to €13,000. Many Bangladeshis seek international protection for economic reasons, driven by high unemployment and economic disparities in their home country.

Smugglers use social media to lure migrants with promises of a better life in Europe. However, asylum seekers from Bangladesh face slim chances of protection due to the lack of war or inhumane treatment in their country.

Challenges and Consequences

With the EU planning to designate Bangladesh as a safe country, visa issuance and asylum approvals are becoming stricter, potentially pushing more Bangladeshis towards illegal migration routes.

Experts suggest that offering legal migration options could reduce fatalities associated with illegal journeys. However, recent trends show a decrease in work permits issued to Bangladeshis by EU countries.
