brussels - EU member states agree on new sanctions targeting Russian shadow fleet and saboteurs in Europe, facing opposition from pro-Russia Hungary, leading to a package of smaller measures.

Hungary Blocks Major Sanctions Against Russia in EU Agreement

EU member states have tentatively agreed on new sanctions aimed at the Russian shadow fleet and individuals involved in sabotage in Europe. However, major decisions like a Russian gas boycott faced dissent, primarily from Hungary, resulting in a package of smaller measures.

Key Measures

The agreement includes expanding the list of oil tankers from the Russian shadow fleet, blacklisting 75 individuals and entities, and taking action against around 30 companies evading sanctions.

Additionally, the EU plans to impose an export ban on chemicals used in producing chemical weapons and address hybrid attacks in Europe. Legal grounds have been established to counter activities like the Russian sabotage fleet damaging undersea cables. Over twenty organizations and individuals will also face sanctions for spreading disinformation.

The sanctions await approval from all foreign ministers and hope for consensus in their upcoming meeting in Brussels.
