Hundreds of migrants still land in Italy

rome - Hundreds of migrants have landed in Italy on Monday. The Italian authorities gave the green light to this, after other European countries had shown their willingness to absorb more than half of the 450 or so asylum seekers.

The migrants had been taken from a crowded boat that had left Libya on Friday. However, they were not allowed to land immediately in Italy, which not only wanted to pay for the relief. As a result, asylum seekers were forced to wait on board two ships until an agreement had been reached about their fate.

Italy had given permission on Saturday to remove eight migrants who urgently needed medical assistance. A day later, 27 women and children were allowed to land in Pozzallo. The last passengers followed Monday. The authorities also carried out eight alleged people smugglers in police cars.

Italian Minister Matteo Salvini (Interior) said that five EU countries have offered to take over fifty migrants each. 'Italy is no longer the refugee camp in Europe', he concluded according to news agency ANSA. The office of Prime Minister Conte also responded with satisfaction. 'Today we can say for the first time that migrants have landed in Europe. '
