washington - House Republicans have rejected a new package of measures aimed at preventing financial problems for the federal government, increasing the likelihood of a potential shutdown.

The package was a compromise that House Republican leader Mike Johnson reached with the Democratic faction. The incoming president, Donald Trump, as well as vice president-elect JD Vance and Trump advisor Elon Musk, have spoken out against the stopgap measure, putting significant pressure on it.

The US is in search of a budget solution, as the federal government could face a partial shutdown as early as this Saturday if no action is taken. The proposal was to keep spending at current levels until the newly elected Congress can vote on a new budget in March. Republicans argue that the proposal goes too far, especially due to the inclusion of billions of extra dollars in the budget. Trump is also opposed to this.

Trump and Vance have labeled the concessions to Democrats in Congress as 'treason.' In a joint statement, they demand a tougher stance from Republicans. 'If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, they should show how tough they are,' Trump and Vance said, partly in capitals.

While Trump has not formally weighed in on the budget, he already wields significant influence over the rest of the Republican Party.
