South Korea Forest Fires Threaten Heritage Sites

Authorities in South Korea are battling one of the worst forest fire outbreaks in history, affecting nearly 15,000 hectares and claiming four lives. The dry weather and strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts.

The ancient Gounsa Temple, over a millennium old, was unable to be saved despite efforts to remove valuable items. The UNESCO village of Hahoe, showcasing 14th-century buildings reflecting Confucian culture, has been evacuated as a precaution.
