ankara, turkey - European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas meets with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara to discuss Turkey-EU relations.

Turkey-EU Relations at the Forefront

European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas visits Ankara for a high-level meeting with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The discussions focus on Turkey's EU membership process, updating the Customs Union, and visa liberalization. Fidan emphasizes Turkey's strategic goal of EU membership and the revitalization of the accession process. The need for starting negotiations on updating the Customs Union and concluding the dialogue on visa liberalization are key topics on the agenda.

Cooperation on Migration and Syria

Migratory cooperation between Turkey and the EU is also expected to be addressed, with discussions on burden-sharing based on fair responsibilities. Fidan is anticipated to highlight the importance of fair sharing of responsibilities in the migration partnership. The meeting is likely to touch upon Syria's reconstruction post-Assad era, where Turkey is ready to collaborate with the international community, including the EU. Fidan may call for the removal of sanctions on Syria during the EU foreign ministers' meeting on January 27 and emphasize Turkey's willingness to cooperate in rebuilding Syria.

The ongoing Turkish-Iranian diplomatic talks on regional issues were part of Fidan's recent phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi.
