High Chinese life in prison for corruption

beijing - A former prominent official of the Communist Party in China has been sentenced to life imprisonment for corruption. This is reported by the Chinese state press agency Xinhua.

The 54-year-old Sun Zhengcai has been found guilty of accepting bribes worth 170 million yuan (22.4 million euros). Sun has known and said Tuesday will not appeal.

The conviction of Sun is the result of President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign. Xi has made it his personal mission to address the widespread corruption in China. Since he became president, thousands of civil servants, party members and high military personnel have been convicted.

Critics accuse him of using the anti-corruption campaign to silence his political opponents.
