- Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt is deceased. The 96-year-old politician of the Social Democratic SPD died Tuesday in Hamburg. His doctor 's death known. Schmidt had been ill for some time.
Schmidt was chancellor from 1974 to 1982.
