washington, usa - NTSB investigation reveals crucial instruction may have been missed in fatal helicopter collision with American Airlines plane over Washington.

NTSB Investigation on Washington Helicopter Crash

The recent investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) into the helicopter collision with an American Airlines plane over Washington has raised significant safety concerns. The NTSB reported that the military helicopter, a Black Hawk, may not have received a crucial instruction from air traffic control before the accident. It was revealed that approximately 17 seconds before the collision, the helicopter crew was instructed to fly 'behind the CRJ,' referring to the type of passenger aircraft approaching. However, due to a microphone being open for communication with the control tower, the crew did not hear this message.

Furthermore, discrepancies were found in the altitude readings between the pilot and the instructor on the helicopter. Although the helicopter was flying at 85 meters at the time of the collision, the cockpit readings may not have reflected the same altitude, leading to what NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy described as 'confusing data.'

Experts have also suggested that the use of night vision goggles by the helicopter pilots may have hindered their ability to spot the approaching passenger plane.

President Donald Trump attributed the crash to diversity policies in the aviation sector, a claim unsupported by evidence. The NTSB, however, did not list diversity policies as a contributing factor to the crash.
