jerusalem - The release of a list containing names of Israeli hostages in Gaza has sparked uproar in Israel amid ongoing discussions for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Over the weekend, there were positive signals about a potential agreement between Israel and Hamas. As part of the deal, the remaining hostages would be released in batches. Asharq al-Awsat, a Saudi newspaper based in London, was the first to publish a list of 34 hostages who would be released first under such a deal. Other media outlets like Reuters and the BBC claim to have received the list from Hamas.

However, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the list is the same one that circulated in July last year, with only six names removed due to executions or rescues since then. The spokesperson also highlighted the lack of clarity on the status of the hostages on the list, as Israel has not received confirmation or clarification from Hamas regarding their fate.

Organizations representing family members of Israeli hostages in Gaza have expressed anger over the list. The Hostage Families Forum, for instance, has always advocated for the simultaneous release of all hostages. A spokesperson mentioned being shocked and dismayed that the Israeli government continues to consider a phased release. A mother of a hostage not on the list compared it to the Holocaust, stating that this time the selection is being made by the Israeli government, not the Nazis.

Despite objections from families regarding phased releases, talks between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire appear to be progressing positively. Reports indicate that Mossad Director David Barnea and White House Special Envoy for the Middle East Brett McGurk are in Qatar for discussions on a ceasefire.
