Guatemala Agrees to Accept Deported Individuals from the US

Guatemala's President Bernardo Arevalo announced a new agreement with the US regarding deported migrants. Arevalo stated that deported individuals will be accepted, and the transportation costs for the return process will be covered by the US. During an official visit to Guatemala, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Arevalo and spoke at a joint press conference.

Arevalo mentioned that not only Guatemalan citizens deported from the US but also individuals from other countries will be accepted. He emphasized the importance of economic development for a long-term solution to the migration issue. Arevalo stated, 'There is no such thing as a safe country.' He clarified that the current agreement is a new migration regulation aimed at identifying those willing to accept migrants according to the needs through discussions with various companies and the private sector.

During the administration of former US President Joe Biden, a total of 61,680 Guatemalans were deported from the US in 2024, while this number was recorded as 55,302 in 2023.
