bangkok - Thai veterinarians found eighty pieces of plastic with a total weight of eight kilos in their stomach during an autopsy of a dead whale. The beast succumbed during a five-day action to save him.

The cetacean was found exhausted on Monday in a canal in the south of the country. Veterinarians tried to save the seaweed for days. On Friday, the animal spat five plastic bags and died shortly thereafter. After the autopsy, doctors found another eighty plastic bags and other plastic objects.

'This plastic waste made the pilot whale sick, so he was no longer able to hunt for food,' according to the Coast Guard.

A lot of plastic is used in Thailand. The authorities have recently launched campaigns to encourage people to use less plastic. Every year, eight million tons of plastic bottles, packaging materials and other rubbish are dumped in the sea. That is threatening or deadly for underwater life, but it can also get into the human food chain, according to the UN environmental authority UNEP.
