Ghana gets new president

accra - In Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo Saturday sworn in as new president. At the ceremony in the capital Accra some six thousand people are expected to attend, including eleven African Heads of State.

That the BBC reports. Akufo-Addo was in December for the third time participating in the presidential elections and then defeated the incumbent President John Mahama. It will probably also be present at the heavily guarded ceremony at Independence Square.

The 72-year-old former human rights lawyer promised during his campaign, which was dominated by the ailing economy, free secondary education and the construction of a plant in each of Ghana's 200 districts. Critics have questioned the viability of these promises.

During the reign of Mahama had to financially help out the International Monetary Fund with a loan to halt the economic downturn.

Ghana has since the end of military dictatorship a democracy in 1992. The peaceful transfer of power enhances the image of the African country as a stable rule of law.
