The newly formed Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance leader Sahra Wagenknecht called for a change in Germany's foreign policy towards the US, emphasizing the need to shift from 'loyalty to the US' to 'independence'.

Prior to Trump's statements, the idea of increasing defense spending by NATO members was rejected by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Scholz deemed the proposal of increasing defense spending immature, questioning who would bear the cost.
