germany - Trump's call for NATO members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP sparks debate in Germany.

Recent call by US President Trump to raise defense spending of NATO members to 5% of GDP has led to discussions in Germany. German politicians are opposing the 5% target as being too high, despite generally being open to the idea of increasing defense spending.

Marcus Faber, Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), stated that the 5% target is too ambitious and NATO countries should agree on a target above 2%.

Former Chairman of the Defense Committee of the FDP, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, believes that while it is necessary for NATO countries to increase defense spending, Trump's 5% demand is excessively high.

Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz emphasized that the share of defense budget in GDP is merely an arithmetic figure. He stated that the focus should be on strengthening the German Armed Forces and re-establishing national and alliance defense.

The newly formed Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance leader Sahra Wagenknecht called for a change in Germany's foreign policy towards the US, emphasizing the need to shift from 'loyalty to the US' to 'independence'.

Prior to Trump's statements, the idea of increasing defense spending by NATO members was rejected by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Scholz deemed the proposal of increasing defense spending immature, questioning who would bear the cost.
