berlin - Party leaders of the four major German parties vying to become the next chancellor of Germany clashed in a live TV debate over migration and economic policies.

German Party Leaders Face Off in TV Debate

In a televised debate, Chancellor Scholz defended his government's policies against attacks from conservative rival Merz and far-right AfD leader Weidel. Tensions rose as accusations flew between the leaders. Merz vowed not to cooperate with Weidel's party in the next parliament, while Weidel defended AfD as 'liberal-conservative'.

The recent attack in Munich has reignited the debate on migration policy. Scholz emphasized efforts to limit irregular migration, while Merz criticized the low number of deportations and refugee programs for Afghans. Habeck condemned Merz's stance on cooperating with the Taliban.

The candidates also clashed on economic issues. Germany faces a second consecutive year of recession, with Habeck, the Minister of Economy since 2021, facing criticism. Merz questioned the decision to close the country's nuclear power plants and criticized supply chain legislation under Scholz. He called for reducing corporate taxes and controlling bureaucracy.

A post-debate poll by RTL showed Merz leading with 32%, followed by Scholz at 25%, and Habeck and Weidel at 18% each. The elections are scheduled for Sunday, February 23rd.
