German Intelligence Labels AfD as Extremist Threat to Democracy
The German intelligence service has classified the political group Alternative for Germany (AfD) as extremist, allowing authorities to intensify surveillance efforts. This designation permits the recruitment of informants and interception of communications without banning the party.
Previous Suspicions
Some branches of the AfD, including its youth wing, had already been identified as right-wing extremist. The national party, which became Germany's second-largest party in the previous elections, has been under suspicion since 2021.
Minister's Statement
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that the AfD discriminates against entire population groups and treats citizens with a migration background as second-class. She accused party members of making racist remarks about immigrants and Muslims.
