German formation resumes

berlin - More than three months after the elections, the German cabinet talks are entering a new phase on Sunday. Chancellor Angela Merkel talks with the Social Democratic leader Martin Schulz and with Horst Seehofer from the Bavarian Christian Democrats.

The party leaders and group leaders met on Sunday morning at the headquarters of the SPD. Merkel thinks that cabinet formation is successful, Schulz said that his party does not draw red lines. Seehofer said that he has no requirements in advance, but that he wants to keep the profile of his party.

Officially it is not yet a formation. The CDU from Merkel, the SPD from Schulz and the CSU from Seehofer want to find out whether it is worth talking to. The SPD has a party conference on the negotiations on 21 January. Seehofer is optimistic. 'I believe we can do it. In any case, I am very hopeful. What we need now is discipline, courage and a little creativity. Then it will work ', he said Saturday. The SPD thinks that the cabinet may be around by Easter. That falls this year on 1 and 2 April.

CDU, CSU and SPD are more or less dependent on each other. They also ruled together in recent years. They suffered losses during the elections on 24 September. Chancellor Merkel then negotiated with the liberal FDP and with the Greens, but these discussions broke down. Polls show that the Germans assume that the so-called Grand Coalition is coming again.
