atlanta - In the US state of Georgia, a forty-year-old man was executed for the murder of a prison guard in 1996. Robert Butts Jr. was put to death by a lethal injection in a jail in Jackson. He is the tenth person to be executed in the United States this year.

Butts, along with his accomplice Marion Wilson, robbed the prison guard Donovan Parks outside of service for the Wal-Mart near Atlanta from his car. The two pulled him out of the car where Butts shot the man.

The execution was initially planned for Thursday, but a request for a petition was still being examined. However, the committee decided that the verdict could be executed. Attorneys still appealed to the Supreme Court to stop the execution, but that request was also rejected.

The second suspect is also sentenced to death.
