Genoa wants to rebuild collapsed bridge

genoa - The authorities in Genoa want the remains of the collapsed bridge to be demolished, and that a completely new bridge will be built on the spot. They have asked operator Autostrade to help with this.

'We want to drive the new bridge with our cars in October 2019', said the mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci. He presented the plans Friday with the governor of the Liguria region, which includes Genoa.

The famous architect Renzo Piano, who comes from Genoa, designs the bridge. 'The new bridge has to stand for a thousand years. It is made of steel and must be simple, 'says Piano. The architect is best known for the Center Pompidou in Paris, The Shard in London and the science museum NEMO in Amsterdam.

The important traffic bridge from the sixties collapsed in mid-August. Dozens of cars fell about 45 meters down. As a result, 43 people died.
