sofia - In Bulgaria, commotion arose about the death of dozens of horses. Activists found the dying animals on a mountainside in the west of the country, near the border with Macedonia.

The Public Prosecutor announced on Tuesday that about seventy animals have died.

The horses that are still alive are in bad shape. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service said that an investigation had begun on the owner of the approximately one hundred animals. He would have received 'substantial grant amounts' from the EU to breed horses.

Activists had sounded alarms about the condition of the animals on Sunday. 'They are in great danger because of the deep snow, low temperatures and wolves,' said activist Elitsa Dimitrova. 'They are starving. They have not eaten for a long time and they are helpless. If they have no strength anymore, they just fall in the snow. '

The unveiling led to a stir in the Eastern European country. Both animal rights organizations and citizens reacted shocked to the fate of the animals.
