paris, france - After eighteen years in death row, a Frenchman convicted of drug offenses in Indonesia has returned to France.

Return to France

A Frenchman who was sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug offenses has returned to his home country after spending eighteen years in the death row. Atlaoui was arrested in 2005 in a factory in a suburb of Jakarta where police found large quantities of drugs. He was accused of being a chemist in the drug laboratory, a claim he has always denied, stating that he was working as a technician, not a drug criminal.

Indonesia has some of the strictest laws against drug offenses and has carried out numerous death penalties. In recent weeks, several death row inmates have been released, including a Filipino mother and five Australians.
