France wants vignette for trucks

World September 24, 2018 15:16

paris - The French government wants to introduce a special toll for trucks that cross the country. The French Minister for the Environment François de Rugy said this Monday. The government is thinking of a sticker or vignette. Next year the government will come up with a detailed plan.

The minister says that it is not just about the environment, but also about extra money for investments in the infrastructure. He recalled the traffic bridge collapsed in Genoa in August. To prevent something like that also happening in France, investments are necessary.

The transport sector reacted immediately, because he no longer wants extra costs. A lot of toll is paid on French motorways. A few years ago, a special 'écotax' on heavy trucks fell as a result of protests after the French government invested hundreds of millions of euros in it.
