France Introduces New 'Super Speed Camera' to Detect Multiple Violations

Several French cities are set to deploy new 'super speed cameras' this year, designed to detect multiple traffic violations simultaneously in a bid to improve road safety.

Enhanced Detection Capabilities

The new speed cameras, known as Équipement de terrain urbain (ETU), are equipped with advanced technology that allows them to identify various infractions at once, such as speeding and running a red light.

These ETUs, described as discreet and efficient by AutoPlus magazine, can even issue double fines for drivers committing multiple offenses like speeding through a red light.

Future Innovations with AI

Future upgrades to these super speed cameras may include artificial intelligence capabilities to monitor additional violations like illegal parking, failure to wear seat belts, or using a phone while driving.

Expansion and Criticisms

The new cameras have already undergone testing in Toulouse and Metz and are planned for installation in cities like Montbéliard, Marseille, Montpellier, and Lyon this year.

However, the French motorists' association, 40 Millions d’automobilistes, criticizes the proliferation of speed cameras, arguing that traditional police patrols would better serve road safety instead of these automated systems, which they believe are primarily revenue generators for the government.
