paris - France will return 26 colonial art works to the West African country Benin. The office of President Emmanuel Macron reported that Friday. The announcement came after a French commission of experts had advised to return objects from former French colonies from French museums to the country of origin.

The objects that go back to Benin are statues and other works of art that the French have captured in the war in 1892 against the then kingdom of Dahomey. The artworks are now exhibited at the Quai Branley museum.

The government of Benin had officially asked France a few years ago to return the objects.
