Former Surinamese President Desi Bouterse has passed away. Bouterse was on the run after being convicted last year for his role in the December Murders of 1982 where fifteen opponents of his regime were killed.

In January of this year, he was supposed to report to prison to serve the first day of his twenty-year sentence. From then on, no one knew his whereabouts. Last Sunday, the police in Suriname conducted a raid at his residence, where he was not found.

The fugitive former military leader is said to have passed away at his hideout after a brief illness. The body has reportedly been brought to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname.
