Former Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan (80) died

amsterdam - Kofi Atta Annan, former Secretary-General of the UN, died in Switzerland at the age of 80. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced this on Saturday.

Annan was born in 1938 in Kumasi, Ghana. He was married to a Swedish and leaves behind three children.

Annan worked for the United Nations almost his entire career. From 1997 to 2006 he was Secretary-General of the United Nations. In 2006, Annan was succeeded by the South Korean Ban Ki-moon.

In 2001 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with the United Nations.

In 2007 he founded his own fund: the Kofi Annan Foundation. The fund is committed to sustainable development, peace and security.
