manila, philippines - Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte arrested at Manila airport for crimes against humanity. ICC investigation on 'war on drugs' period.

Former President Arrested

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila airport upon returning from Hongkong. His lawyer claims the arrest is unjust as the Philippines is not an ICC member.

During his presidency from 2016, Duterte targeted drug-related issues, advocating for the killing of drug dealers and users. Human rights organizations estimate between 12,000 to 30,000 deaths during the 'war on drugs,' many by street killings.

The ICC investigation focused on the period between 2011 and 2019, including murders in Davao City, where Duterte was previously mayor. The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019, refusing cooperation. Duterte defended his actions as necessary for the country during a domestic investigation, showing no remorse.

Current President Ferdinand Marcos has opposed any ICC arrest warrant cooperation.
