new york - Genaro García Luna, the former Security Minister of Mexico, has been sentenced to 38 years in prison in the United States for his involvement with a drug cartel.

Genaro García Luna, the 56-year-old former Security Minister of Mexico, has been sentenced to 38 years in prison in the United States. A jury determined that he had accepted bribes from a drug cartel while he was supposed to be combating them.

According to prosecutors, García Luna protected the drug smuggling operations of the Sinaloa cartel led by drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán. García Luna maintains his innocence, claiming he has always been honest and was targeted for revenge by the criminals he helped put behind bars with the United States.

He is the highest-ranking Mexican official ever tried in the United States. García Luna was the face of Mexico's fight against drug trafficking and was arrested in Dallas, Texas in 2019. His trial took place in New York, where El Chapo was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison after being extradited from Mexico.
