rome - Italian President Sergio Mattarella has commissioned former IMF official Carlo Cottarelli to form a government.
A Cabinet headed by Cottarelli probably can not count on the support of a majority of parliament. New elections therefore seem inevitable. The Lega and the Five Star Movement (M5S) were on the verge of forming a government, but broke off when Mattarella vetoed their intended minister of finance.
The leaders of Lega and M5S reacted furiously to the intervention of the president. Lega leader Salvini accused Mattarella of dancing to the pipes of Brussels, Paris and Berlin. The president, in turn, stated that he has the right to refuse candidates who could damage the country. He said the parties refused to put another candidate minister forward.
