tbilisi - Former Georgian prime minister Giorgi Gatsjaria has been severely beaten and hospitalized after an attack by multiple men in a hotel lobby in the coastal city of Batumi.

Giorgi Gatsjaria, the former Georgian prime minister, has been seriously assaulted and hospitalized after an attack by multiple men in a hotel lobby in the coastal city of Batumi. A spokesperson for his political party stated that Gatsjaria was severely beaten but survived the incident.

Gatsjaria leads the opposition party For Georgia, which holds the government responsible for the attack. A statement from the party called the assault a politically motivated attempt to intimidate the opposition and silence critics.

Opposition figures and journalists have been targeted in Georgia in recent months. The spokesperson for Gatsjaria mentioned that the identity of the attackers has not been determined yet, and the party is urging the hotel to provide CCTV footage to the police.

Georgia has been facing a political crisis since the controversial election victory of the ruling party Georgian Dream last year. The party has expressed reluctance to discuss EU membership in the coming years, which has sparked outrage among many citizens.
