Former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro of Brazil has been accused by the police of attempting a coup in 2022, which could result in a 28-year prison sentence if prosecuted.

The 69-year-old Bolsonaro, who ruled Brazil between 2019 and 2022, is facing the possibility of criminal prosecution following a thorough investigation that included testimonies, phone records, bank records, and house searches.

Along with Bolsonaro, 36 other individuals have been charged with attempting to overthrow the democratic rule of law through violent means and being part of a criminal organization.

Five individuals were arrested for planning to assassinate President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other officials. These included two retired generals who held ministerial positions in Bolsonaro's government.

The attempted coup and assassination plots were reportedly thwarted by military commanders who refused to join the conspirators.

Bolsonaro is barred from leaving the country and running for elections until 2030 due to previous convictions related to abuse of power.
